So often our problems can seem overwhelming, too big and hairy to solve. When we embark upon a problem solving exercise in an organisation we approach it in a systematic and logical way. Firstly, we investigate the real problems and then drill down until we understand their root cause. It is only then that we can start to see the solution. In business the problem is often obscured by 'smoke screens' hence the need for a systematic, evidence based and un-emotive approach. This principle also applies to life. The analytical triangle is a tool to help us identify the real issues, get to the root cause of them and start to identify potential solutions
When problems become big, complex and highly emotive, use the 'let's take back control' 5 step approach:
1.Identify any emotive or subjective elements - an opinion, anger, frustration, excitement and remove them, they are simply clouding the issue
2.Identify the core, non-emotive and evidence-based problem
3.Identify whether there is any information missing from the problem
4.Develop a logical, method based solution
5.Overlay with critical points of sensitivity or emotion if required to the solution - but don't let this over-ride it's resolution
It's comforting to bring logic to seemingly unsolvable problems, admittedly not always do-able in the moment but if nothing else, applying the approach gives you chance to take a breather and reflect for a minute or two.
